Raheem spoke to the FA website ahead of the England game and here is what he had to say.
England host the Azzurri on Tuesday evening, hot on the heels of last week’s win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam. And as Gareth Southgate’s squad continue to fine-tune their preparations for this summer’s World Cup, the Manchester City man is hoping his team can click when it matters.
“I think we have a good team,” he told the England programme for Tuesday’s game.
“We have a new philosophy, thanks to the manager and the ideas that he’s bringing through.
“We’re trying to get our defensive unit sound and we’re a work in progress.
“But with the players we’ve got, and we’re all at a similar age and developing at the same time, we can hopefully go to Russia and play our game.”
Even though Italy won’t be joining the Three Lions in Russia this summer, following their qualifying play-off defeat against Sweden last November, Sterling knows they’ll still provide a stern test.
And with a sell-out crowd waiting to see England’s penultimate game at Wembley before their trip east in June, he’s hoping Southgate’s side can put on a show.
“To play against a team like Italy, these are the games that are really exciting,” he added.
“These are the matches where there will be attacking football and a bit more space, so these are the ones we could really test ourselves and see where we are as a team.”
